BERLIN – There are fewer and fewer pharmacies in Germany – after closing 238 of them in 2023 and another 283 in the first six months of this year, there are 17,288 left. This is less than ever, according to data from the umbrella association of pharmacy organizations ABDA.
Today, there are only 21 pharmacies for every 100,000 inhabitants, and the rate of 19 in Germany’s capital and largest city, Berlin, is far below the European average.
“Pharmacists are closing their doors because they have no economic perspective” said the president of the Association of German Pharmacists Hans-Peter Hubman.
This also discourages young pharmacists who are thinking about starting their own business.
Therefore, only 24 new pharmacies were opened in the first half of last year.
The pharmacy margin was last increased 11 years ago, by three percent.
Cumulative inflation since then is 30 percent, and the cost of running a pharmacy has increased by 60 percent, Hubman said.
