Three years after their introduction, hybrid units will be withdrawn from rally cars of the highest category – Rally1.
With the implementation of the Rally1 hybrid technology, the cars suddenly became complex and, above all, too expensive. The hybrid system was developed by the German company Compact Dynamics GmbH, which was also responsible for maintaining the hybrid units. Manufacturers reported quite a number of problems with the hybrid system, so the initial euphoria about this new system passed rather quickly.
Although electrification is a trend, the FIA met the demands of the teams (Toyota, Hyundai, Ford – M-Sport) to simply remove the hybrid system from the vehicle, in order to simplify and make the technology cheaper.
From the 2025 season, the expensive and complicated 2025 hybrid system will no longer be in Rally1 vehicles. At the same time, the FIA reduced the maximum weight of the vehicle from 1,260 to 1,180 kilograms, and the reduction of the diameter of the air restrictor from 36 to 35 millimeters is also a novelty. According to the FIA, these measures aim not only to reduce costs, but also to reduce the differences between cars in the Rally1 and Rally2 categories.
The FIA emphasizes that it will continue to take care and protect the agricultural environment. The FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) will continue to use E-fuel and adapt the technical regulations, which will apply from 2027 and should also include alternative drive technologies.
