Not even a turn and then leaves. In Melbourne, world tennis experienced its first surprise of 2025 on Monday. Finalist in 2023, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (12th) was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open, defeated in four sets by the young American Alex Michelsen (42nd).
After a disappointing 2024 season, the three-time semi-finalist of the first Grand Slam of the season was beaten 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Tsitsipas had not lost so early in Melbourne since 2018, when Canadian Denis Shapovalov eliminated him as soon as he entered the fray.
Promising member of the new generation, Michelsen (20 years old) will play in the 2nd round either against the Australian James McCabe (258th), beneficiary of an invitation from the tournament organizers, or against the Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce (142nd), another representative of the next generation of world tennis aged 19 years.
