WhatsApp is now finally offering transcripts for voice messages in selected languages. So you can listen to them or read them when necessary, for example on the train or in the office.
WhatsApp was already working on this in 2021, and now there is finally a function that should make millions of users of the messaging app very happy. Users will soon be able to simply read voice messages in the transcript directly in the app instead of listening to them. This is particularly important for those who either don’t like listening to voice messages or prefer to use the reading option in certain situations.
WhatsApp tested this feature months ago, and now the official roll-out follows.
Soon possible:
Read WhatsApp voice messages instead of listening
Easily read voice messages on WhatsApp and sort draft messages
The new function will be rolled out in the next few weeks.
On the official WhatsApp blog explains the company:
(…) Sending voice messages makes communication with friends and family even more personal. There is something special about hearing the voice of someone close to you even when you are far away. Sometimes you might be out and about, in a noisy place, or receive a long voice message that you can’t listen to (…).
In the Settings and Chats area, users can turn them on and off under the new tab “Transcriptions of voice messages”. The languages for the transcriptions can also be selected there. However, WhatsApp does not mention what these are. By long-pressing a voice message, you can receive the transcription in the chat.
When exactly the function will be available is still unclear. WhatsApp leads to:
(…) Transcripts will initially be introduced worldwide for a few selected languages in the coming weeks. But we plan to add more languages in the coming months (…).
The meta app Instagram was also working on transcribing voice messages at the beginning of the year. These could come soon after the roll-out on WhatsApp. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is now providing users with a new message drafting feature that makes managing unfinished chats easier.
