A 75-year-old man from Olbia was transferred in serious condition to the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari after ingesting poisonous mushrooms. The man, hospitalized since yesterday evening, had presented himself to the emergency room of the John Paul II a few hours earlier complaining severe abdominal pain. The 75-year-old arrived at the Olbia health facility accompanied by his family who brought with them some wild mushrooms that had been collected by the elderly man in the countryside near the city. The man, convinced that they were perfectly edible, then decided to cook them and eat them for dinner.

Immediately after dinner the 75-year-old began to feel very ill. It was only thanks to the examination of the mushrooms brought to the emergency room that the experts of the Mycological Inspectorate of the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service, promptly notified by the doctors, were able to trace the origin of the illness, caused by the ingestion of the ‘amanita falloideone of the most toxic mycological species ever. The elderly man would have confused these highly poisonous mushrooms with edible ones, very similar in appearance and characteristics.

The Gallura Local Health Authority reminds you that the offices of the Mycological Inspectorate of the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service are open in Olbia on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am to 1pm in the relevant structure, the former San Giovanni di Dio hospital. While in Tempio Pausania’s headquarters are in the Hospice of the ASL Gallura in via Limbara. The service can be used for free with direct access, without any waiting. “Before bringing the harvested mushrooms to the table, it is necessary to have them examined by experts to find out if they are edible”, explains the ASL.
