Finland sends Mummola, directed and written by Tiia Kouvo, to seek the Oscar nomination for the best foreign film.

Mummola tells about the joint Christmas celebration of three generations, where Finnish Christmas rituals meet the tensions of family relationships and deeply hidden things that are not talked about.

In the opinion of the Finnish Oscar Board, “the exceptionally self-voiced and controlled Mummola shows how form and emotion are combined into cinematic skill” and its “precise observations of Finnish ordinaryness expand into a universal experience, the approachability of which is proven by the fact that Mummola has already gained a strong foothold internationally.”

The jury of film professionals formed under the leadership of the Film Chamber of Finland is responsible for selecting Finland’s Oscars.

The members of the selection board were writer and director Sakari Kirjavainen, makeup artist and makeup designer Kati Koskela, screenwriter Karoliina Lindgren, director Sameli Muurimäki, costume designer Riitta Röpelinen, cultural export designer Otto Suuronen and actor Timo Teern. The chairman of the board was author and film critic Kalle Kinnunen.

The final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. The Academy Awards will be presented on March 2, 2025 at a gala televised around the world.
