More than 270 guests had to be evacuated from a hotel in Abano Terme, near Padua, in northern Italy, when a fire broke out overnight. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that around 40 people needed emergency medical treatment for smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital.

The fire broke out in the technical room on the second floor of the hotel, which caused the rapid development of thick smoke that spread throughout the entire building. Firefighters managed to put out the fire before dawn, and the entire hotel was evacuated by then.

In a dramatic rescue operation, firefighters used a ladder to rescue a family of three trapped in their room on the sixth floor from a truck. Fortunately, they were not injured in the process.

Abano Terme, where the incident took place, is a well-known health resort with about 20,000 inhabitants, popular for its thermal springs in the nearby Euganean Hills, which attracts many tourists.
