Two firefighters from the South and Southeast fire brigade in Barreiro had to receive medical treatment for exhaustion yesterday after rescuing five residents from a burning building in Lavradio, Barreiro.The alert for the fire, on the first floor of a building on Avenida Joaquim José Fernandes, came at 9:20 a.m. Five minutes later, a team of 25 firefighters and police officers, supported by 10 vehicles, arrived at the scene. A source from Civil Protection told Morning mail that “because the flames prevented the five occupants from leaving safely, it was necessary to use ladders to remove them”.
Nélson Maria, 29, a professional firefighter from a Permanent Intervention Team of the South and Southeast Fire Department, and Miguel Mártires, 24, a volunteer from the same corporation, entered the burning property and discovered a lot of scrap metal. Two more flames broke out, forcing the residents to be evacuated quickly. Everyone reached the ground unharmed. The firefighters also left the burning building. Nélson Maria had to receive emergency care at the Barreiro Hospital due to heatstroke, while Miguel Mártires received oxygen at the scene.
