Firefighters: Restaurant inspections will check the legality of buildings or gas heaters

Prague – Inspections of restaurants, including front gardens, should check the legality of buildings, gas heaters or pressure cylinders. The Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic (HZS) sent instructions to municipalities and regions today. This was announced to ČTK by HZS spokesman Jan Kocourek. It is a response to a fire in a restaurant in Most last weekend, which claimed seven lives.

“We assume that the first inspections could take place in February,” said the spokesman. According to him, the recommended procedure for municipalities consists of four main parts. They are the legality of the construction, the inspection procedure, requirements for local gas heaters and appliances, and requirements for storage and handling of propane-butane pressure cylinders, he listed.

“Today we sent the prepared instructions for the inspection of restaurant facilities, including front gardens, shelters and terraces, to the Union of Cities and Municipalities, the Association of Local Self-Governments and the Association of Regions of the Czech Republic,” added Kocourek. The general director of HZS, Vladimír Vlček, said in the middle of the week that inspections should focus on closed front gardens where gas appliances are used for heating.

There was a fire in the restaurant in Mostek on the night of Sunday, January 12. According to preliminary information, the fire could have been caused by an overturned portable heater and the subsequent explosion of a gas cylinder in the front garden, but the cause is still under investigation. The fire caused damage estimated at seven million crowns. The police are investigating the case on suspicion of reckless endangerment. Today, people honored the memory of the seven victims of the fire during a funeral mass in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mostec.
