First signs of life: commissioning of Astra 1P started

It took a long time for the new Astra 1P to reach its working position at 19.2 degrees East just a few days ago. In the past, some time was taken to put new satellites into operation. Things seem to be different with Astra 1P.

We know from earlier that new TV satellites first completed a series of final tests after they reached their working position before they were put into operation. Based on these experiences, we had expected that Astra 1P would not have been put into service until around January 20th at the earliest. But now everything is happening much faster.

Have any switches already taken place?

The first changes have already been made. On the night of January 13th to 14th, 2025. Specifically, the changes took place between around 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. At a time when hardly anyone is watching TV.

Which transponders have already been switched?

As far as we know, so far only transponders that have been marketed directly by SES, i.e. the satellite operator. They mainly contain small specialty channels that are not particularly popular with viewers.

It is quite possible that these transponders will be used as an initial acid test to see whether the satellite is working satisfactorily. The change from one satellite to the other takes place transponder by transponder and is spread over several days, or rather, nights. To do this, the transponder on the old satellite must first be shut down. Only after this is switched off can the transponder of the new satellite be switched on. However, this does not happen like with a light switch with a click to full power, but rather gradually. This means that the desired transmission power is only achieved after a certain amount of time after several intermediate steps.
