Fisheries experts predict stable prices for red caviar before the New Year

A sharp increase in prices for red caviar in Russia on the eve of the New Year is unlikely, said German Zverev, president of the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE). In his opinion, rising prices could cause a serious decline in demand.

In a conversation with TASS, the head of the fishing industry association explainedthat prices for red caviar have a seasonality associated with the period of salmon fishing. And holiday demand has minimal impact on selling prices.

“The rise in prices in the wholesale and retail segments for the New Year can only be caused by rush demand. However, given the current inflation and the population’s actual disposable income, I doubt that it will happen,” Zverev said.

As an industry representative emphasized, “retailers and wholesalers understand” that rising prices could collapse product sales.

Zverev denies the risk of a shortage of red caviar in Russia before the New Year: according to VARPE estimates, about 11-12 thousand tons of caviar will be produced in 2024, which corresponds to the average annual consumption of the product in the country.

At the same time, the head of VARPE warned Russians against buying counterfeits or counterfeits from scammers who can take advantage of the information agenda surrounding the prices of red caviar.
