Five districts on the continent are under yellow warning this Thursday due to the forecast of locally heavy showers, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, due to a depression, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The districts of Faro and Beja will be under yellow warning until 3pm this Thursday and again on Friday between 3am and 9pm.
The yellow rain warning for the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal will be in effect between 12pm and 6pm this Thursday and in Santarém from 3pm to 9pm this Thursday.
The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
According to IPMA, a change in the weather is expected from this Thursday due to “a cold depression in the upper levels of the atmosphere, which gradually moved from northeast to southwest towards mainland Portugal, and which will position north of Madeira and west of the mainland in the coming days.
In a statement, the Institute says that from this Thursday and until the end of Sunday morning, showers are expected, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, with occasional hail, particularly in the central and southern regions, a more significant impact is expected in Baixo Alentejo, Algarve, Setúbal, Lisbon and Santarém, where extreme wind phenomena may occur.
The forecast points to precipitation values of the order of 10 and 20 millimeters in one hour in the central and southern regions, with precipitation persisting.
“It should be noted that in situations of instability, there is variability in the spatial and temporal distribution of heavy precipitation, ultimately determined by local scale factors, not predicted by the models, and which can only be monitored based on the surveillance that will be carried out through meteorological radars, electrical discharge detectors and satellite images”, indicated the IPMA.
The minimum temperatures this Thursday on the continent will vary between 01 degrees (in Guarda) and 11 (in Aveiro and Faro) and the maximum between 07 degrees (in Guarda) and 18 (in Aveiro and Faro).
