Five Principles for the Ethical Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more prevalent in our daily lives and has the potential to drastically affect many aspects of society, including health, education, economics and security. In order for this technology to truly serve humanity in an ethical way, it is necessary to adhere to certain principles of its development and application. Five key principles — transparency, fairness, privacy and security, accountability and social benefit — ensure that AI is useful, reliable and accountable to all users.

  1. Transparency:The first principle refers to the fact that the design, training and application of AI models must be clear and transparent. For AI to be reliable, users must understand how and why AI makes certain decisions or makes recommendations. Transparent AI systems should provide insight into the data they use, the logic of their algorithms, and possible bias in their models. This principle also encompasses “explainability”, where AI decisions can be clearly explained, especially in critical situations such as healthcare or criminal justice.
  2. Justice:
    Fairness ensures that AI works impartially, without discrimination based on race, gender, age or other characteristics. Because AI models are often trained on existing data, they can unknowingly learn and transmit the bias that exists within them. For example, if a hiring algorithm is trained on a data set that is predominantly male, it may unfairly favor male candidates. Fairness in AI requires rigorous testing and ongoing monitoring to detect and correct bias, thereby promoting fairer outcomes. This principle is particularly important in sectors such as employment, finance and the judiciary, where decisions can have significant consequences for people’s lives.
  3. Privacy and security:
    Given that AI is increasingly processing personal data, privacy and security are essential. AI systems should protect individuals’ data, using it responsibly and with their informed consent. Privacy also includes “data minimization” — using only the data necessary for a specific task — and ensuring that sensitive information is not exposed to unauthorized parties. Security means protecting AI systems from hacker attacks, which may include data theft or data manipulation.
  4. Responsibility:
    Accountability in AI implies that designers – creators, organizations and end users are responsible for the outcomes of AI systems and the consequences they cause. If an AI-based decision leads to harm or an unintended consequence, there must be a clear and transparent way to determine individual responsibility and compensation. Organizations implementing AI must regularly monitor the performance of the models they use and be prepared to explain or justify the decisions made by AI.
  5. Social benefit:
    AI should be developed with the aim of benefiting society and avoiding or minimizing the harm that may arise from its use. This principle promotes the use of AI to improve people’s lives, solve societal challenges, and promote general well-being. Whether it’s healthcare, education or environmental management, AI has the potential to drive positive change in society. However, AI systems need to be applied judiciously to ensure that they prioritize the well-being of humanity as a whole, improve quality of life and do not lead to abuse.
