The women’s handball team was seconds away from a miracle, which was forced to play overtime against Sweden due to a goal scored at the very end of the match. The encore was no longer about us, unfortunately the great fighting Hungarian team, which finished in sixth place at the Olympic Games, was eliminated.

Olympics, women’s handball tournament, quarterfinals:
Sweden-Hungary 36-32 (16-15, 29-29, 31-29) – after extension
Pierre Mauroy Stadium, Lille, v.: A. Konjicanin, D. Konjicanin (Bosnians)
shots/goals: 55/36 and 57/32
goals from seven meters: 2/1 and 5/5

Hungary: Böde-Bíró – Győri-Lukács 4, Klujber 11, Vámos 6, Füzi-Tóvizi 1, Kuczora 4, Szöllősi-Schatzl 3, substitutions: Papp, Debreczeni-Klivinyi, Pásztor, Albek, Simon 3, Márton

Compared to the world record 26,548 spectators of the French-German (26-23) match, there were hardly less people at the third quarter-final meeting, so the teams started amid the fantastic encouragement of the cheerleaders and the fans – including roughly equal numbers of Swedes and Hungarians.

The first Hungarian attack ended without a goal, but on the other side, Roberts scored twice, and Klujber hit the post. The first five minutes passed with quick goals and some good saves by both goalkeepers, then Klujber equalized from the seventh (3-3), and after the Swedish response, Kuczora also took the goal.

The Scandinavians were unable to score during Vámos’ suspension, but then after two ineffective attacks, they scored two goals in the 15th minute and Vladimir Golovin called time out (6-8). This did not help, in the 18th minute the difference was already four goals (7-11), in addition to Roberts, Blohm from Győr also had three goals.

Klujber was successful for the fifth time out of seven, but the Swedish lead of 3-4 goals remained stable for a while. Then we managed to get closer with a good defense, and after Böde-Bíró’s save, Vámos scored a goal to get within one. In the last minute, there were two opportunities to equalize, but in the end the opponent could go to rest with a one-goal advantage (15-16).

Five minutes into the second half, Győri-Lukács equalized (18-18) and then took the lead for the first time during the match (20-19). However, this did not prove to last and at 21-22 Golovin asked for time again. Vámos’s break-in resulted in a seven-and-two-minute suspension, the former was sold by Klujber, so the score was tied again at half-time (23-23). Füzi-Tóvizi scored from the stand-in, to which the Swedish captain responded with a timeout (25-24).

Five seconds passed our semi-final

Simon Petra’s goal led the way, but the Swedes equalized in turn. There were four minutes left when Füzi-Tóvizi was sent off and the Scandinavians took the lead with Hagman’s seven-pointer (28-27). However, Simon scored again, and after mutually spoiled actions, the Hungarian national team was able to attack for the victory. Golovin asked for a timeout and with Vámos’ brave break, the score was 29-28, but Koppang equalized with five seconds to go, and overtime followed.

The overtime started with two Swedish goals, no Hungarian shots were scored, and only Böde-Bíró’s saves prevented the opponent from leading by three (29-31). At the beginning of the second five minutes, the Swedes took down their goalkeeper, so they attacked seven times, which Koppang converted into a goal. Bundsen saved Füzi-Tóvizi’s shot, Koppang was successful again, then Blohm followed (29-34).

Kuczora finally broke the Hungarian deadlock, then scored again, but Roberts responded. From seven, Klujber improved, but did not run any further, the final result was 36-32, set by Lindqvist. Among the goalkeepers, Böde-Bíró saved 13 shots, Bundsen 22.
