Five winning Friday links

On Wednesday, an impressive record was broken. It happened in Dublin, where the German champions from Leverkusen had to suffer defeat for well over a year. The team has gone 51 games without defeat and they won the Bundesliga without losing a single game. They did that on Wednesday, when Italian Atalanta deservedly won 3-0.

The winners were happy. The losers disappointed. And that’s how it is in life. My father once said that you can’t win every time, and my mother added “Losing and winning with the same mind”. I was a terrible bad loser as a kid. When we lost football games, I suddenly had pain in my knee. When I lost badminton matches, I would sometimes hit the racket hard on the floor.

I’ve gotten rounder over the years. Today, I can tolerate losing, although I still love to win. This applies both in Wordfeud, on the golf course and when we have music quizzes. But I won’t win at all costs. Sometimes I lose almost on purpose. For example, if you compete with children. Here, I can think of letting the child win.

Will win at any cost

And yes, there are actually grown people who would rather win at any cost. Children should not be spared, and they might as well learn that you lose once in a while. Say the victorious adults. And they must be allowed to have that attitude. In peace. I will still let myself lose when I play football against Aksel aged 3. He laughs, has fun and thinks I’m the funnest to win over. When Aksel gets a little older, he will probably have to figure out a lot of things.

Among other things, that you can’t win every time, and that you suffer defeat every now and then in life.
