Hansi Flick and FC Barcelona got off to a bad start in the Champions League despite being outnumbered. Despite the first goal in the premier class by Spanish European Championship star Lamine Yamal, the Catalans, with the former national football coach on the sidelines, lost 1:2 (1:1) at AS Monaco. It was the first defeat in six competitive matches for the 59-year-old.
It had started very badly for Flick and Barca: In the 10th minute, defender Eric Garcia received a red card in front of basketball legend Michael Jordan for pulling the emergency brake on Takumi Minamino after a passing error by goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. National player Kai Havertz and Arsenal FC could only manage a 0:0 draw against Europa League winners Atalanta Bergamo. The biggest chance was missed by Mateo Retegui, who missed a penalty for the hosts (51′).
