Single-use ketchup sachets from fast food restaurants, as well as plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables, could be phased out under a new European Union deal signed this week.

More specifically, the European Council and representatives of the European Parliament agreed on a provisional political agreement on a proposal for a regulation on packaging and packaging waste, with the objective of combating the increase in packaging waste produced in the European Union.

Ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise sachets will be banned

Under the scheme, European lawmakers required takeaway businesses to allow customers to bring their own containers to fill with cold or hot drinks, as well as ready-made food, without charging extra.

Also, by 2030, these takeaways must commit to offering 10% of their products in packaging that can be reused. Single-use plastic packaging for indoor dining, as well as ketchup and condiment packets, will be prohibited.

In addition to ketchup sachets, this measure also applies to other types of disposable containers, such as: those small doses of shampoo and creams that we find in hotel bathrooms.

Those plastic packaging for spices will also be banned, as well as thin fruit bags. For the application of these measures, the European Union will offer a five-year derogation, subject to compliance with strict regulations.
