Belgian meal box manufacturer Foodbag is introducing reusable boxes to replace existing cardboard boxes. In the future, they want to replace single-use packaging, such as pasta or rice, with reusable alternatives.
According to the company, this intervention should save up to 150 tons of cardboard in the first two years. ‘The reusable boxes are the result of two years of research and development, during which various types of boxes were thoroughly examined and an advanced IT system was set up with RFID technology to manage the flows of reusable packaging. Foodbag received financial support for this from the Flemish ‘Green Deal Anders Verpakt’, Foodbag reports in a press release.
The boxes are also sturdier, allowing them to be stacked higher, meaning more boxes can be loaded and transported per load.
Customers who opt for a reusable box – so it is not mandatory – pay a deposit that is refunded to the customer’s account after return.
