Ten different goalscorers on their way to the title aptly describe the performance of the Spanish national football team in the final tournament in Germany, where The Red (“red” – Spanish) were crowned European champions for the fourth time in history. “We weren’t favourites. I just wanted my team to be competitive here and we did it. We should be proud, but we have to keep developing,” stressed Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente after the 2-1 win over England in the final.
Nico Williams scored the first goal of the final in Berlin at the beginning of the second half, but the English once again equalized in the 73rd minute after successfully bringing on the reserves. When it seemed that extra time was inevitable, the Spanish national team continued to attack more actively and at the end of the match they achieved their goal – a goal worthy of the title was scored by Mikel Ojarzaval in the 86th minute. The 27-year-old Basque became the 10th player for his country to score in the finals, while Spain set a European Championship finals record with 15 goals. The team did not lack bright leaders, such as Lamins Jamals, who celebrated his 17th birthday the day before the final and made at least one productive action in the three decisive games, or Rodri, who was recognized as the best player of the final tournament, but the strength of the Spaniards was hidden in the depth of the team.
