In the last days of October, thanks to the relatively good weather and the all-terrain vehicle, we reached the top of Rogozna for the first time without a long and tiring hike, first in the village of Odojevići, where the poor brother and sister Gorica and Milan Acković were waiting for us, and then in secluded Pasije. Potok, where we visited the spouses Dilja and Milanko Drobnjak. For more than a decade, Milan and Gorica have been wards of our Humanitarian Bridge, and our readers have been helping Dilja and Milanka for five years.
To get ready for winter
A good reason for the new visit was a donation of 400 Australian dollars sent from distant Melbourne to Rogozna by the humane Popović family, originally from Montenegro. In the accompanying message, the benefactors emphasized that they are sending 200 dollars each to Gorica and Dilja and that they want them to warm up well and get ready for the winter.
– There was no help for a long time, last year we worked really hard and barely survived, but, thank God, this year was a little better. The latest donation will make life much easier for us, we will first buy medicines for Gorica and the most basic foodstuffs, we will also settle part of the electricity debt. If something overtakes us, we will also renew the wardrobe. Many thanks to the Popović family. We pray to the Almighty to reward their kindness, but also the humanity of all the people from far away worlds who have been helping us for years. If it wasn’t for this help, we wouldn’t be able to survive in this mountainous backwater, far from the city and people – says Milan and points out that knowing that he is not forgotten and that there are always good people ready to help him and his sister means more than the money he received. .
He takes care of his sister
– I could go to Novi Pazar, I would find a job, get married, have a family and probably live better. But his love for his sick sister Gorica (she has had mental problems since birth) was stronger. I couldn’t leave her alone in this incompetent state, my conscience would gnaw at me, I would suffer all my life. I must not separate from Gorica
not a moment, because of that I can’t do anything and earn money – complains Milan.
Spouses Dilja and Milanko Drobnjak, who have been trying to fulfill themselves as parents for five years, since Dilja’s arrival from Albania to poor Rogozna, are also fighting for bare survival. God has not looked at them until now, two years ago they lost a baby, but they do not give up in the hope that they will get an heir and that, despite the misery and poverty, they will be able to raise him.
– “Vesti” readers bought us a cow, a refrigerator and a washing machine that we cannot use,
because we don’t have water in the house. Donations then dried up, this is our first this year,
It means a lot to us, because in this backwater there is nothing to tear a dinar from – says Dilja
Drobnjak while washing his and Milanko’s clothes in a metal trough.
– We also want to build at least one small room with a bathroom, which would mean a lot to us, especially if we have a child. We will spend the donation from Melbourne on groceries, winter is coming,
we will need a lot of flour – adds Dilja and emphasizes that he expects the greatest help from benefactors from the diaspora and readers of “Vesti”.
– There is no one here to help us, there are still two or three households left in our Passije Potok. Everyone left in search of work and a better life. We had nowhere to go
let’s go, we still hope that we will see better days on our doorstep, whatever it may be – adds Milanko.
Mihrija Murić from the village of Stup in the municipality of Rožaje was also without a donation from a benefactor for almost a year. A single mother who, after the death of her husband Abdullah, with her ten fingers,
and mostly working as a woodcutter, educates the sons of Enes and Ernes. Our readers with Mihria
are, with shorter interruptions, for a decade and a half. The last aid of 100 francs has arrived
these days, our reader Erna Mulić sent her from around Bern.
Hard jobs
– Benefactors saved us, they bought us a chainsaw, a cow, several goats, a stove and a refrigerator. Before every winter, we received money for flour and other foodstuffs, if it weren’t for the readers of “Vesta”, we wouldn’t have survived in this backwater – says Mihrija and points out that even the most difficult men’s jobs are not difficult and foreign to her, but that, especially in winter, there are none . The donation from Switzerland will help her to secure the supplies of flour needed for the long and cold winter.
Tihomir remained alone
During the summer and autumn, our readers sent help to Tihomir Balović, a poor woman from Rogozna who had been alone for years, without any income or opportunity to work, with her disabled and immobile wife Milica. Unfortunately, Milica lost her battle with a serious illness a few days ago, so Tihomir was left alone in his desolate village Rajetići. He still desperately needs the help of benefactors.
