The US today imposed sanctions on entities in Iran and Russia, accusing them of trying to interfere in the US elections this year, the US Treasury announced.
The statement stated that the entities – a branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and an organization linked to the Russian military intelligence agency – aimed to “incite socio-political tensions and influence the American electorate during the 2024 US elections”, reported Reuters.
-The Cognitive Design Production Center planned influence operations from at least 2023, the Ministry of Finance said, while the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE) spread disinformation about candidates in elections and directed and subsidized the creation of fake images, videos and audio recordings.
The Finance Ministry said the CGE also manipulated the video to produce “baseless allegations about the 2024 vice presidential candidate.”
The ministry did not specify which candidate it was.
