While Porsche has been on an upward trend for several years, the start of 2024 is a little more complicated and this is reflected in sales.
The car market has not been in the best shape since the beginning of the year. Overall, all manufacturers are suffering, especially in the electric car segment.
And even among manufacturers that are not usually affected by the crisis, sales are slowing down. This is the case of Porsche, which, after years of growth, is seeing its sales decline compared to the same period last year. In the first half of 2024, the brand delivered a total of 155,945 vehicles during this period, recording a decrease of 7% compared to the same period in 2023.
China completely weighs down Porsche’s results
In Europe, things are going well for Porsche as deliveries have seen a notable increase with 38,611 vehicles delivered, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year. This growth contrasts with the manufacturer’s overall trend in other markets. In Germany, it is even more impressive as the manufacturer shows a growth of 22%, with 20,811 vehicles delivered to customers.
In China, however, it is a downturn. Once a booming market for Porsche, China recorded a significant decline of 33%, with only 29,551 vehicles delivered. Deliveries in North America decreased by 6%, to 39,558 vehicles. Despite this decline, the North American market remains crucial for Porsche. For overseas and emerging markets, Porsche delivered 27,414 vehicles, a figure stable compared to the previous year.
Which models sell best?
Without surprise, The Cayenne remains the brand’s best-selling modelespecially since it recently got a new version. The Cayenne led the way with 54,587 deliveries, up 16%. The Macan came in second with 39,167 units delivered. It saw its sales drop by 18%, mainly due to the launch of new models in several markets, a 100% electric variant.
The 911 continues its good momentum, with 28,212 units delivered, an increase of 8%. Demand for this iconic model remains strong worldwide. It is still complicated for the Panamera despite the arrival of a new model. Deliveries fell by 25%, with 13,255 units sold, although the gradual arrival of new hybrid versions should reverse the trend.
The Taycan, which has also had a new phase, sees its sales fall, with a sharp drop of 51%, with only 8,838 units delivered. It remains to be seen whether the new version manages to reverse the trend. The Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, at the end of their life, attracted 11,886 customers, representing a growth of 8%.
Reversal of the trend to come?
The situation should change in the second half of the year, with a reversal of the figures and, no doubt, an increase in sales for the year 2024 in total compared to 2023.
Detlev von Platen, Member of the Management Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, explains that “The new, fully electric generation of the Macan has recorded very satisfactory order intake. The first vehicles will be delivered to customers in the second half of the year.”He also stressed that Porsche will put on the road the most powerful product range in its history in 2024, with a focus on fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and combustion engines.
As a reminder, Porsche delivered 320,221 new vehicles in 2023, marking an increase of 3.3% compared to 2022.
