The 1963 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster, a classic car once driven by legendary American driver and actor Steve McQueen, will be sold at the Mecum auction, with an expected price of between $1.25 million and $1.5 million.
Chassis number CSX2161 was driven regularly by McQueen from 1965 until the end of 1967, but he never actually registered it in his name. According to information available to the auction house, it was originally registered to film producer David L. Wolper, then purchased by Elmer Bernstein, who gave it to McQueen to use. When Bernstein sold the Cobra in late 1967, McQueen was allowed to continue driving the Shelby for a few more months before he had to hand over the keys to the new owner.
The car spent most of its life in the USA, but in 2003 it was imported to Switzerland, and then to Great Britain three years later, where it remained until this year. It should be said that in the early 2000s it was painted in the current black color and that there is a roll bar behind the driver’s seat. The car has FIA Halibrand rims measuring 15×6.5 inches, while there is an opening on the hood.
What is important to point out is that the body and engine are original. It’s a V8 engine with forged aluminum pistons and a steel crankshaft, which is paired with a four-speed manual transmission through which power is transmitted to the rear wheels. Disc brakes are responsible for stopping.
