For the first time, hybrid cars are the best-selling in Europe

The electric car sales they are struggling to take off in Europe and despite the growth recorded in September 2024, with 213,443 units for a +13.9% compared to the same month of 2023, the annual final figure remains in decline. The transition to mobility on tap remains – very – gradual, with more and more motorists turning to the purchase of hybrid models. Which last month achieved a historic record.

In fact, for the first time hybrid cars were the best-selling in Europe, clearly surpassing petrol cars, historically queens of the market.

Generalized phenomenon

The numbers speak clearly: a September 2024 in Europe – also calculating the EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) and the United Kingdom – the hybrid cars 337,168 were registered, with a growth of 12.3% compared to 335,842 in September 2023. On the other hand, petrol models fell by 18.8%, from 450,491 to 329,207 units.

More than 121 thousand pieces were “lost”, thanks to the general decline in the car market in Europe (-4.2% in the last month), but only as regards non-electrified fuel systems. Or almost. If indeed electric and hybrid (which contains mild hybrid and full hybrid) rise, the plug-in loses share with -11.7%, as does the dieselnow in constant decline with September 2024 closing at 93,304 units and -23.8% compared to the same month of 2023.

<p>Looking at the numbers for the first nine months of the year, petrol cars continue to lead the ranking of preferred fuel systems, with 3,337,265 units, closely followed by hybrids: 3,008,233. The numbers are now very similar, but the former have lost 5.6% of market shares, while the latter have grown by 19.2%. At this rate we wouldn’t be surprised to see a historic overall overtaking by the end of the year. </p>

A model also available with a full hybrid powertrain unlike its “cousin”, which still focuses heavily on LPG while awaiting the arrival of the new generation, expected for 2027.
