OpenAI presented its self-developed search engine, SearchGPT.
Even though it was rumored before, the newest search engine in the tech world, SearchGPT, arrived like a bolt from the blue. OpenAI has been planning its entry into the search market for years, but until now no concrete information about it has been leaked to the public. Although ChatGPT can be used to obtain information on its own, more is needed for specific search tasks. For example, in addition to the trained data, you also need fresh information, which ChatGPT does not have due to the lack of an Internet connection. This problem has already been solved on the new AI-based platform, but its operation is completely different from all previous search engines.
While Google and similar market competitors mainly provide results for a query, SearchGPT serves us what it has found on the world wide web based on a completely different concept. The new search engine provides answers to the questions asked and provides the related results in a short, concise way.
To begin with, we must enter the question to which we are looking for an answer or a search word for which we are interested in results in the search bar. In the attached example, the searcher was asked what festivals will be held in a given city in August.
SearchGPT first describes what it found in a sentence or two, then summarizes the findings one by one, which it also supplements with a summary of the contents found there. At the end of each result, the source from which the given information comes is also included, which functions as a link and opens it after one click.
If we are not satisfied with the result, we can refine the search with additional questions. In a video uploaded to X, we can now see how this happens in practice.

In an interview conducted with him, Kayla Wood, the spokesperson of OpenAI, said that the search engine that has just been released is only a trial version, which will be tested in a small circle and will be perfected and supplemented based on the feedback received. The technological background is provided by the large language model behind the company’s popular chatbot, GPT-4. The ultimate goal is for the search engine to integrate into ChatGPT over time.
Due to the copyright scandals of the past year, OpenAI has pre-contracted with a number of newspaper publishers, including News Corp (The Wall Street Journal), Vox Media (The Verge) and the AP (Associated Press) news agency. According to their business rules, publishers can decide for themselves how their content will appear in the search engine, if they allow it at all.
Now that the new search engine has entered the scene, Bing’s recent move to support Microsoft’s search engine with AI-based answers also makes sense. Whether SearchGPT will be able to become a real challenger in the 91 percent biased market of search engines, it would be difficult to say now, but it is certain that it is currently causing unpleasant moments for Google’s main shareholders.
