For the first time, Samsung is also preparing extended Android support for its budget phones

Samsung seems to be turning its attention to the budget segment, offering a level of software support unheard of in this price category.

Budget phones usually only get two to three years of updates.

Extensive software support

Samsung and Google offer the best update policies in the smartphone industry, with their top models getting seven years of Android updates and security patches.

The Galaxy S24 series, launched in early 2024, was the first to offer this. Support was later extended to the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6.

A16 5G model: 6 years of updates

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy A16 5G could also benefit from extended software support.

Specifically: six years of operating system updates and security patches. Most budget and mid-range devices running Android only offer two to three years of updates.

Opportunity for Samsung

Extending this benefit to the budget range could be a major competitive advantage for Samsung, differentiating it from its rivals such as Xiaomi and OnePlus.

Specifications

The Galaxy A16 5G is expected to launch by the end of this month, possibly alongside the Galaxy Tab S10 series.

This model will have, in addition to extensive software support, technical specifications not to be neglected.

The 6.7-inch AMOLED display will have a 90Hz refresh rate and the processor will be an Exynos 1330. The phone will also have IP54 dust and water resistance.

Possible reactions

It is important to note that all information on this topic has not yet been confirmed by Samsung.

However, if they come true, many users will probably stop avoiding cheaper phones because of the limited software experience.

This move could even encourage other manufacturers to improve and speed up updates on their devices instead of stuffing them with pre-installed software.

Such an extended support policy could be very well received in the market. It could encourage users to keep devices for longer periods, thereby reducing e-waste.
