For Those Who Don’t Know! Hyundai IONIQ 5 Can Be a Generator, Here’s How It Works

DAPURPACUID – IONIQ 5 is one of PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia’s (HMID) mainstays at the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). This mid-size electric car from Hyundai is packed with technology and features, one of which is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), or what is commonly called a genset.

The V2L feature allows Hyundai IONIQ 5 become a generator as a power source to support mobility for its users, such as for outdoor activities anywhere and anytime. This V2L technology has an AC type power supply of 3.6 kW which exceeds the domestic power standard for one household.

This electric current can be obtained from two sources that can be used simultaneously, namely from the external port which can be used when the car is stopped or turned off.

The second power source is from a port located on the inside. Precisely under the second row of seats that can still be used even though the car is being driven.

Innovative features in IONIQ 5 such as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) which allows users to charge various electronic devices anywhere and anytime.

“The V2L function can be applied to charge any electrically powered device, such as electric bicycles, electric scooters, camping equipment, and even treadmills,” he said. Francis Soerjopranoto, Chief Operating Officer PT HMID at GIIAS 2024.

Another function of V2L is being able to charge when other electric cars are running out of battery. So it can be used to charge the car using a Handheld Portable Charger.

This power requirement can certainly be met well by the V2L feature because it is capable of supplying power up to 3,600-Watt or 3.6 kW. Regarding how V2L works and uses it is as follows.

First, connect the V2L connector device to the port. Set the battery power draw limit which is set on the head unit (Menu: EV > EV Charge Transfer V2L). This battery power draw limit can be set from 20 percent to 80 percent.

Then open the cover of the V2L connector device, then connect it to the desired electronic device, then close it again.

The next step is to press the on/off button on the connector so that the electrical power can be used directly as needed. To find out if power is being supplied, check for a green light on the connector device or the V2L indicator that appears on the head unit.

Next, to stop using V2L, press the on/off button on the connector device, press the car door lock and unlock button on the smart key, then the connector device can be removed from the port.

Meanwhile, to use the V2L feature with a power source from the inner port, simply open the port cover, then connect the electronic device you want to use.

There you can see the status of the V2L system by looking at the color of the light that lights up on the port. The blue indicator light indicates standby mode, green indicates that electrical power is being used and is in normal condition, then red indicates that no electrical power is being distributed.

How, very functional right? In addition to being environmentally friendly because of zero exhaust emissions, Hyundai IONIQ 5 can be used as a generator to replace the electricity source anywhere.
