Forcadell hopes that there will not be a break in ERC after the congress

The former president of the Parliament Carme Forcadell hopes that there will not be a split in Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya after the congressional process to choose the new leadership of the party. He stated this in an interview on the RTVE program Cafè d’Idees. Just yesterday, the debate of the three candidates to preside over the formation was held at the ERC headquarters.

“I hope not,” Forcadell responded regarding whether a rupture or split could occur in ERC. “It is worrying, yes, it is worrying because this has happened before but I think not this time.” “I think it was already said yesterday, because everyone said they wanted to put the game back together,” he noted. Likewise, he has assured that he has “quite a lot of indications” that a second round of voting can be held. This scenario will occur if none of the candidates obtains more than 50% of the valid votes.

Regarding his sympathy for the candidates to preside over the party, Forcadell said that he “very much liked” Helena Solà, from Foc Nou. The former president of the Parliament has said that “I always tend to give women a lot of support” and that she believes Helena Solà “did very well.”

Likewise, he has acknowledged that he believes he will support the candidacy of Xavier Godàs, Nova Esquerra Nacional. Regarding Junqueras, from Militància Decidim, he has assured that he assumes that he does not want to leave because “he believes that he is capable of turning the game around and I personally do not believe that.” Likewise, he has asked “not to do without anyone” and considers that “here we all add up.”

Forcadell also believes that “a renewal is needed” because “the independence movement in general is losing votes” and that Esquerra “is losing votes in the last four elections.” “This means that people do not trust us, that we must do something wrong and, therefore, I think that we need to change the strategy and that we need to change the leadership,” he noted.

The former president of the Parliament has also revealed that she voted no to the consultation on whether to invest Salvador Illa. “I don’t believe the financing thing,” he said, “although I know that they are extraordinary pacts.” Forcadell has acknowledged that if he had thought that they could be fulfilled he would have voted “yes”, but that he voted no because all his “memory” and “experience” tell him that “they have never been fulfilled”.

Regarding the posters, he considers that “a president is sometimes responsible, even if it is by omission.” Forcadell also feels responsible because “I was in the executive” and that “perhaps my mistake is not having found out, perhaps I am responsible for not having found out.” “When you are in management, you have some responsibility, by action or by omission,” he said. “As the leadership of Esquerra, I also feel responsible and I feel very bad and I have asked for forgiveness.”
