The automaker attributed the losses to insufficient government support for the production of electric vehicles, weak demand for them and growing competition from Chinese companies. Ford clarified that the cuts should occur by the end of 2027, the company plans to cut 2.9 thousand jobs in Germany and 800 in the UK, as well as reduce production volumes of the Explorer and Capri electric models at the Cologne plant.
Ford is not the first to curtail production in Germany. At the end of October, it became known that Volkswagen would close at least three factories in this country and lay off “tens of thousands” of employees amid declining demand for the company’s cars in China and Europe.
As Reuters notes, Ford’s European division is undergoing a “painful restructuring.” In February 2023, the automaker announcedthat he intends to cut 3.8 thousand jobs. In July 2024, the company reportedthat in 2025 it will close the plant in Saarlouis. In November, Ford said it would cut shifts at its major Cologne plant.
In October the European Commission approved duties up to 35.3% on the import of electric vehicles from China. The measure will be in force for five years. Earlier, sources told Bloomberg that EU countries had agreed to introduce such tariffs. According to the agency’s interlocutors, the EC could set duties at 45%.
