The history of the Ford Fiesta ended in July 2023, with the last example of the current generation produced. But what we experienced a year ago may have only been a “see you later” and not a real goodbye.
According to what was reported by Autocarthe plans of the American company foresee the arrival of some compact models from 2026 onwards, all based on a new platform.
A new family
The development of the new architecture was entrusted to Alan Clarkea former Tesla engineer. She will create more compact and cheaper models positioned below the Explorer, Capri and Mustang Mach-E.
As revealed by Marin GjajaChief Operating Officer of Ford’s Model E division, the first car based on the new platform will arrive between the end of the 2026 and the beginning of the 2027 and will debut first in the United States, before being sold in Europe.
Ford Fiesta restyling (2022)
This first model could be the new generation of Puma, while at the moment we can only speculate what the other products will be.
However, Gjaja believes that “over time, electric cars will become smaller and smaller” and that is why it is easy to imagine a real family of compact cars. And a return of the Fiesta, a historic name for the brand, perhaps even more than the Mustang, Capri and Explorer, at least in relation to sales achieved over the decades.
A specialized team
Certainly, the resources that Ford has deployed for this platform are considerable. A recent report by the US website TechCrunch revealed that the team that worked on the architecture amounts to about 300 people. Among them are engineers from Tesla, Rivian and Apple, and even aerodynamicists from Formula 1.
As for the powertrain, Gjaja explains that the new architecture will likely use lithium-iron-phosphate battery technology (LFP) low-cost, which is rapidly becoming dominant in electric vehicles.
Furthermore, the shapes of these future Fords “will not be conventional” and will be “differentiated” in their respective segments. We just have to wait for the next developments to understand which direction the projects of the American brand will take.
