Fabio Quartararo states that Moto2 can be more difficult than the premier class.
The 2021 premier class champion had a somewhat unique path to success as he never really shined in the younger classes.
Quartararo was 10th and 13th in Moto3, then 13th (with the Pons Racing team) and 10th (with the Speed Up Racing team) in his two seasons as a Moto2 rider.
But then he won the MotoGP championship on Yamaha in his third attempt.
“Moto2 is, in my opinion, the most difficult category of all”he said in a recent interview.
“When I was competing there were different riding styles and it was difficult to adapt, whereas in MotoGP there is only one style and you have to follow that path.”
“It was easier for me to get used to MotoGP than Moto2. The brakes were sometimes a problem, but in general it was like that.”
He hasn’t won a Grand Prix in more than two years, but has won Yamaha’s trust, signing a new multi-year contract that reportedly makes him the highest-paid rider in the top class.
But when will the Japanese manufacturer return to winning ways?
“Security does not exist in these areas”he said.
“If I think about the tests at Sepang and the current situation, the difference is clear, because we know the way we need to go.”
“Changing the mentality of Japanese engineers is not trivial, but we had a one-hour meeting in Mizan, which is an important signal.”
“First of all, a change in mentality has started and now the bike is being followed. Further development in terms of chassis is a significant novelty for us. The initial goal is to be more often in the second qualifying session, which fundamentally changes the situation during the weekend.”
