Khulna Awami League leader and former city corporation councilor Golar Rabbani Tipu was shot dead in Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place in front of Hotel Seagull in the city’s beach area around 8pm on Thursday (January 9). Pedestrians rescued him and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
He is the son of Md Golam Akbar of Daulatpur Deyana Para area of Khulna City Corporation.
A mixed car driver who rescued said that he was coming in front of Hotel Seagull on the beach side road. Suddenly he heard a shot in front of him and this man fell to the ground. Immediately, when people gathered, with their help, Rabbani, who was shot in the head, rescued Tipu and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
This driver said, ‘The road was empty. No one was around or seen running away. I think it was shot from a distance.’
SM Shoaib, the doctor on duty at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, said that the victim was shot in the front-left side of the head and the bullet went through the head and exited along the right ear. It caused major injuries. It was found that he had died before being brought to the hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, Md Ilyach Khan said, “We initially found out that the deceased Golar Rabbani Tipu was a senior Awami League leader and former ward councilor of Khulna. He was on the run from the area since the August 5 uprising. It was not ascertained if anyone else was with him. Immediately after the incident, the police surrounded the entire city to catch the killers. Details are being sought.
