Former food minister Kamrul Islam arrested

Former Member of Parliament of Dhaka-2 Constituency and former Food Minister. Kamrul Islam has been arrested by the police.

He was arrested from the capital’s Uttara-12 sector around 10:30 pm on Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Intelligence Police Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallick confirmed this information to Dhaka Times.

He said he was arrested from Uttara tonight. There are many cases against him including murder. After the arrest, Kamrul Islam is being brought to the DB office of Minturod.

Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, Kamrul Islam, like many Awami League leaders, has been in hiding.

Kamrul Islam served as Food Minister from January 13, 2014 to January 6, 2019. Prior to this, he was the State Minister of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh from 2008 to 2014. This former minister was able to speak controversial words against various political leaders including BNP. He became a Member of Parliament for four consecutive terms.

During his tenure as Minister of State for Law, he is alleged to have accepted crores of rupees in bribes through corruption and irregularities in the appointment of most of the lower court employees. Besides, there are allegations against him of embezzling crores of rupees by purchasing low-quality wheat from Brazil through corruption while he was the food minister. He also faced widespread criticism for this. After the fall of the Awami League government, the ACC has already started an investigation against him. There are at least 24 cases against him.
