Former liberal leader: The leadership of the National Liberal Party should resign very quickly
- The leadership of the National Liberal Party should resign very quickly, declares the former liberal president, Crin Antonescu.
- The former PNL president wants a “leadership with honorable people” around Ilie Bolojan and warns that Romania is facing a “nightmare”.
Antonescu declared, on Monday, on Digi 24, that the election results are catastrophic for the PNL, but “it is a smaller catastrophe embedded in a bigger catastrophe. I think the problems of the National Liberal Party are secondary at the moment to the threats and to the huge confusion we are all in two weeks before a decisive moment. In fact, with a week, because we have parliamentarians who are extremely important, even more important at this moment”.
Asked if Ilie Bolojan is the future president of the PNL, Antonescu said that he does not know whether Bolojan will be the president of the National Liberal Party or not: “what I know is that, very quickly, he should have, should, in terms of hours, resign the leadership of the National Liberal Party, at least the 5 people, the president, the general secretary, the three vice-presidents, to constitute, just as urgently, a leadership team provisionally with four or five people with an honorable image in the party and in the public, of course, with Ilie Bolojan at the head, and to accelerate as much as possible the engines for the elections that take place in less than a week”.
According to Antonescu, a signal must be given as strong and as fast as possible so that people hope, believe that something is changing and that there is something to be expected from the PNL.
“The fact that they have already started, as it seems, all kinds of detractions, compromise formulas and so on, does not seem auspicious to me and I think that if someone is convinced that Ilie Bolojan can help the party at this moment , should give him full support in a formula as clear and urgent as possible”, says Antonescu.
Asked, further, where he thinks Călin Georgescu came from and who is behind him, the former liberal leader answered: “I don’t know, I don’t have the elements to say exactly who is behind Călin Georgescu, but I can say, I think that I have enough elements from Călin Georgescu’s statements at the time, to say that in front of Georgescu and in front of a Romania with Georgescu as president, he is a nightmare. (…) I admit that it tells a beautiful story, for many people who, quite frankly, need stories, I admit that this story can seduce, but this story does not exist in reality. Not in reality, not in history, not in the past, not in the present. And this beautiful dream that Mr. Georgescu is selling is definitely a nightmare. That’s why I think that now is no time for analysis, I think that every party among those who consider it their duty to save not a doctrine, not a person, not a party, but the direction towards Western civilization, must very quickly mobilize everything has”.
Regarding a possible pro-European coalition that would support Elena Lasconi in the 2nd round, of which both PNL and PSD would be part, Antonescu stated that it is needed “without any doubt”.
