Former mayor of Espinho free after house arrest – Portugal

Miguel Reis, former mayor of Espinho and accused in operation Vórtex, is no longer deprived of his liberty.

The group of judges presiding over the trial understood that at this stage the coercive measure of house arrest was no longer justified. The former mayor is thus subject to periodic appearances once a week in court. “Today, a small step marks a new beginning: we regained our freedom. It was 647 days of overcoming, but we were never alone”, wrote Miguel Reis on social media.

The former president of the Chamber was arrested.

The trial in this case has already begun with statements by businessman Francisco Pessegueiro, who said in court that he handed over 5 thousand euros to Miguel Reis so that he could favor real estate projects in Espinho. He also said that he was going to deliver another 50 thousand to him, but because he was very busy he didn’t deliver the amount. Pessegueiro also said in court that Pinto Moreira, former PSD deputy and also former president of the Chamber of Espinho, demanded 50 thousand euros from him.

Miguel Reis guarantees that he is innocent.
