Liam Payne, the singer of the former Irish-British boy band One Direction, was found dead at a hotel in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. It was reported on Wednesday by local media, according to which the 31-year-old musician died after falling from the third floor of the hotel.
Local newspapers La Nación and Clarín said police were called to the hotel in the wealthy Palermo district following an emergency call about an alleged “aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs and alcohol”.
Paramedics later confirmed the death of the singer, who was found in the courtyard of the Casa Sur hotel. The head of the emergency medical system, Alberto Crescenti, declined to release details of the incident, including whether Payne jumped from the balcony or fell accidentally. He told Todo Noticias Crescenti that authorities are investigating all the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death and are conducting an autopsy.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Security of the Argentine capital, Pablo Policicchio, told the AP that Payne “threw himself from the balcony of his room”.
Liam Payne, together with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, formed the globally popular group One Direction at the time.
The band’s fame began to spread after its participation in the British version of the music competition X Factor in 2010, but already in 2016 the group broke up and its individual members devoted themselves to various projects and solo careers.
According to Argentine media, Payne was in Buenos Aires to attend a concert by one of his former One Direction bandmates, Niall Horan.
Payne had a seven-year-old son with his ex-girlfriend, musician Cheryl Cole, who was a member of the girl group Girls Aloud.
