Formula 1 | Decision about Sergio Perez made: Red Bull gives the thumbs up

Sergio Perez has put himself in the firing line due to poor performances at Red Bull despite a recent contract extension. But now the Formula 1 racing team has made a clear decision: the Mexican will not be replaced prematurely.

Sergio Perez is allowed to finish the season in Red Bull. This is the result of a conversation between team boss Christian Horner and motorsport consultant Dr. Helmut Marko, as RTL/ntv and sport.de experienced.

Horner was finally able to confirm to “De Telegraaf” on Monday evening that the Formula 1 veteran would remain a Red Bull driver. “We are looking forward to seeing him back on the race tracks where he has performed well so far after the summer break,” the Briton is quoted as saying.

Sergio Perez has been driving for the Austrian and Thai-run racing team since 2021. His contract was recently extended early until 2026, although the Mexican had repeatedly been publicly criticized by his superiors. Even after signing, the 34-year-old could not silence his doubters; until recently he was considered a possible farewell candidate for the world champion team.

Sergio Perez has been in a form crisis for months

While Perez was able to secure four podium finishes in the first five races at the start of the new season in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Japan and China, he fell into a downward spiral from the Imola Grand Prix onwards.

He finished a disappointing eighth at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, and was eliminated in Monaco and Canada. He was also anything but convincing in Spain (eighth place), Austria (7th), Great Britain (17th), Hungary (7th) and most recently in Belgium (7th).

The Formula 1 drivers now have a four-week break. On August 25th, Sergio Perez will have the chance to overcome his form crisis in Zandvoort. The Italian Grand Prix in Monza is then on the calendar.
