Formula 1 | Ecclestone exclusive: Mick Schumacher “needs support”

Mick Schumacher is hoping to return to the Formula 1 grid. However, the chances of a cockpit in 2025 are not good; Sauber/Audi is said to be leaning towards veteran Valtteri Bottas. Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone thinks Schumi Jr. Support needed in the premier class of motorsport.

In the last few days there have been increasing signs that Valtteri Bottas will be given the second cockpit alongside Nico Hülkenberg at Sauber/Audi for the 2025 season. There has been no official confirmation yet, but hopes of Mick Schumacher’s Formula 1 comeback are dwindling.

“You can understand Audi’s position. They need their number one driver and a number two when they join. They will need a lot of help to protect their brand. They can’t just sit around and not act,” said Ecclestone in an exclusive Interview with RTL/ntv and sport.de on the location of Sauber/Audi. The racing team will compete in Formula 1 as an Audi works team from 2026.

Whether Bottas would be the right choice remains to be seen, said the 93-year-old. “Only time will tell,” said Ecclestone. Bottas is currently driving for Sauber in Formula 1 and can also boast experience from well over 200 Grand Prix starts in the premier class of motorsport.

While the Finn is still waiting for the final award, Hülkenberg’s commitment was officially announced a few months ago.

Ecclestone: Mick Schumacher “talented enough, but…”

Ecclestone sees a difficult path ahead in Formula 1 for the future Audi works team. It is unclear where Mick Schumacher’s path in motorsport will lead.

The 2020 Formula 2 champion “doesn’t need advice, just support,” said Ecclestone. “He would need someone who is a warm-hearted person,” said the ex-Formula 1 boss about Schumacher’s situation. In this context, Ecclestone cited McLaren team boss Zak Brown and Alpine consultant Flavio Briatore as examples.

“He’s talented enough, but hasn’t been given the right opportunity yet,” said Ecclestone about the situation of the 25-year-old, who does simulator work as a substitute driver for Mercedes.
