Formula 1 | Mick Schumacher has no chance? New name appears on Audi candidate list

Mick Schumacher’s Formula 1 dream is becoming increasingly distant. In recent days, another name has appeared on the Sauber/Audi racing team’s list of candidates, against whom the German would have to prevail in order to get the cockpit in the 2025 season.

The list of candidates for the Sauber/Audi cockpit from the 2025 Formula 1 season is getting longer and longer. Mick Schumacher’s name is still on it, but apparently not really high up. In addition to the already well-known names – Bottas, Zhou, Bortoleto, Drugovich and Co. – “Auto, Motor und Sport” brought another driver into play in the past few days: Zane Maloney.

The 20-year-old is having an extremely successful Formula 2 season this year. He is currently in third place in the drivers’ standings with six races to go. He has already been on the podium seven times in 2024 and even won the two opening races in Bahrain.

Maloney is already under contract with Sauber/Audi

A big advantage for Sauber/Audi and Maloney: the chain of command is extremely short. The racing team signed the Barbarian-born driver as a reserve driver at the beginning of 2024. Before that, the youngster drove under the Red Bull flag. If his new team now wants to promote him to Formula 1, all they would have to do is sign the contracts and no major negotiations would be necessary.

It is unclear, however, whether those in charge would prefer to see another experienced driver or a young driver alongside Nico Hülkenberg. Sporting director Mattia Binotto has recently repeatedly stressed that they want to evaluate internally what the best solution for the racing team is in the short, medium and long term. At least officially, the team has not yet come to an answer.

And because that is the case, Mick Schumacher can and must continue to hope for the contract. The place at Sauber/Audi is his last chance to get a place in Formula 1 in 2025. At the moment, however, there is a lot to suggest that he will come away empty-handed.
