Sergio Perez’s father Antonio Perez Garibay has criticized former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher – with statements that clearly have homophobic undertones.
The stumbling block for Perez senior: the speculation and reports about an alleged Red Bull exit and the end of his son’s career in the premier motorsport class.
“There were so many media outlets that said that he was no longer driving in Mexico, or that he was saying goodbye in Mexico. So they should at least apologize,” Perez Sr. explained on the Spanish-language podcast of “ESPN.”
“There is a driver who was in Formula 1 and who is now a journalist, who first claimed that Checo was already out of Red Bull, and then in the following weeks he came out,” added Papa Perez to mention his name with a view to Schumacher, who confessed to his homosexuality in July. “I don’t know if he was in love with Checo. There are a lot of strange things, and you don’t know if he’s a journalist, if he’s a woman, or if he’s a man.”
Schumacher’s words are “in doubt. Not because of Checo Perez, but because of what his (ex-)wife said about him,” Antonio Perez Garibay also alluded to the conflict between Ralf and his long-time partner Cora.
Formula 1: Will Carlos Sainz drive for Red Bull soon?
Whether Sergio Perez will continue to drive for Red Bull in Formula 1 in 2025 is still unclear. According to the latest rumors from the paddock, Ferrari star Carlos Sainz could inherit the 34-year-old Mexican – even though he has already signed with Williams for next year.
“He has a clause in his working paper that says that – if one of the big teams, like Red Bull or Mercedes, comes knocking – he can get out of his contract and occupy the cockpit,” said former F1 driver Martin Donnelly at ” RacingNews365″ the rumors.
Sainz has “the necessary experience” to act as series world champion Max Verstappen’s wingman at Red Bull, said the Northern Irishman. The Spaniard won “races in a car that may be good in qualifying, but can’t keep up in the Grand Prix,” praised Donnelly. “If I’m looking for a driver who can get my car back on track, then I’ll choose Sainz.”
