Formula 1 plans rookie sprint race

The severe restrictions on test drives are a thorn in the side of Formula 1 teams – especially those racing teams that want to give newcomers a chance. If F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has his way, a rookie race could help – possibly as early as the end of 2024.

Test drives in Formula 1 have been subject to severe restrictions for years. This makes it particularly difficult for potential F1 newcomers to gain a foothold in the premier class of motorsport.

The test drive quota was also a topic at the most recent meeting of the Formula 1 Commission. According to the motorsport magazine “Autosport”, various concepts were put on the table – such as a wildcard for rookies in F1 races or extra test days for newcomers.

However, the most practical idea for the organizers of the racing series seems to be a sprint race for rookies, which should take place as part of the tire test in Abu Dhabi after the season. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has now confirmed the idea and spoke in detail about the plans.

Formula 1: Decision on rookie sprint races likely at the end of September

“There is a project on the table, namely the possibility of organizing a sprint race for young drivers in Abu Dhabi,” said Domenicali. “We are thinking about how we can give young people the opportunity to shine during the Yas Marina test and gain experience – not only by driving in the test, but also in a competitive context.”

Further details will be discussed at the end of September, Domenicali continued.

The rookie sprint race would – unlike the other ideas recently discussed in the F1 Commission – not conflict with the current regulations of the racing class. At the test in Abu Dhabi, the Formula 1 teams must use two cars. One of these is reserved for a rookie who has not competed in more than two Grands Prix.

Ferrari reserve driver Oliver Bearman, who will drive for Haas in 2025, would be just as likely to be considered as future Alpine driver Jack Doohan or Kimi Antonelli, who will probably be confirmed as George Russell’s future teammate at Mercedes next weekend.
