Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton talks about possible retirement

Lewis Hamilton has already achieved everything that can be achieved in his Formula 1 career. At 39, he is now one of the old guard and is daring to switch to Ferrari again. But at this age, the question of a possible end to his career naturally comes to the fore.

When you ask Lewis Hamilton about a possible retirement, you notice that the Briton thinks a lot about this topic. In order to find an answer to the question “How long will you continue to drive in Formula 1?”, he listens both deeply to himself and to his fellow drivers.

“There are so many people who ended their careers early and now wish they had driven a little longer,” said Hamilton in an interview with “Esquire”. “They say: stay as long as you can! But I only want to drive when I’m still competitive,” said the seven-time world champion.

Formula 1: Hamilton fights against “bullshit”

“When you’re 22, it’s much easier to train. You didn’t need to recover, you didn’t have any responsibilities outside of the sport. Now it’s different – you have to juggle more things,” the Briton said, referring to his projects outside of Formula 1.

Among other things, he is involved as a producer in the new Hollywood film “F1” with Brad Pitt in the lead role, which will be released in cinemas in 2025. With director Joseph Kosinski, who directed “Top Gun: Maverick” among others, Hamilton tried to remove unrealistic scenes from the script.

“They had the idea of a scene where a car rolls over and then just keeps driving. We had to cut that bullshit because we wanted the film to be as authentic as possible,” Hamilton said.

So there’s a lot to do for the soon-to-be Ferrari driver, who admitted: “There are days when I want nothing more than a break, a real break that lasts longer than the few weeks between December and January. But I have a plan in mind as to when it should last.”
