Founders of iCulture say goodbye, site to BigSpark

Founders Jean-Paul Horn and Gonny van der Zwaag take over parting from Apple news site iCulture and are taking it easy after many years of Apple hecticism. The publisher of iPhoned, Android Planet and c’t BigSpark takes over iCulture.

The two founders speak in a personal message about ‘a bittersweet decision that we had to think about for a long time’.

‘We are still just too young to fully retire, but we are (finally) going to take it a bit easier in the near future. As an independent site, you as the owner have to be at home in all markets. When people came to our office, they were often surprised that we achieved so much with such a compact team.’

The couple now wants to focus their attention onbeterhardlopen.nl, a website whose name speaks for itself. In addition, they are picking up the thread again witheetblog.nl (about smart or otherwise kitchen tools).

It has been 18 years since iCulture.nl (then iPhoneclub.nl) was founded, a few weeks before the iPhone was officially announced.

BigSpark director Arjan Kropman says that iCulture is ‘an extremely strong website that our other brands can learn from’. Conversely, iCulture can learn from ‘converting visitors to paid products’.

An interesting detail is that Van der Zwaag and Horn once also founded Android Planet.
