Four MX-5 models become the first cars to drive from Land’s End to John O’ Groats using sustainable fuel

To celebrate 35 years of the Mazda MX-5, four Mazda MX-5s – one from each generation – drove a 1,000-mile route from Land’s End to John O’ Groats using sustainable fuel.

Powered entirely by Coryton’s 100 per cent biofuel, the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car has become the first car to drive the UK end-to-end using sustainable fuel.

Introduced at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, the Mazda MX-5 has always been the benchmark for pure lightweight sports cars that put the driver at the center of its appeal. To date, Mazda’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima has produced more than 1.2 million MX-5 models. The four cars that completed the 1,000-mile run were from Mazda’s UK Heritage fleet – the 1.6-litre Mk1 from 1990 when the car was launched in the UK, the Mk2 which was launched on its 10th anniversary, the Mk3 which was launched on its 25th anniversary and the Mk4 launched on its 30th anniversary – each represents a key landmark in the MX-5’s history.

Every generation of Mazda MX-5 has completed the journey using SUSTAIN 100 RON E5, Coryton’s second-generation fossil fuel-free biofuel produced from agricultural waste and non-food crop by-products. Without the need to modify cars, this fuel uses carbon that is already in the atmosphere, and plants absorb it as they grow and thus recycle it, and it does not emit additional CO2, as fossil fuels do.

The 1,000-mile journey led to four pioneering organizations that demonstrated the power of sustainable technologies. Although the 100 percent biofuel used is not currently publicly available for purchase, other SUSTAIN fuels are. They demonstrate the role that sustainable fuels can play in the decarbonisation of both modern and classic cars and further highlight how sustainable fuels can complement Mazda’s multi-solution approach to achieving climate neutrality.

The drive from Land’s End to John O’ Groats is just one example of Mazda’s commitment to demonstrating the role that sustainable fuels can play in the decarbonisation of motoring. From June 2023, Mazda’s UK Heritage fleet uses sustainable fuel SUSTAIN Classic 80, which is commercially available to the public. In 2022, the Mazda MX-5 was the first car to drive 1,000 miles across the UK and lap a racetrack in each home country powered by sustainable fuel.
