Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said today that she spoke on the phone with the newly elected US President Donald Trump and told him that it is up to Greenland to decide on independence.
“During the conversation, the Prime Minister referred to the statements of the Speaker of the Greenlandic Parliament, Mute B. Egede, that Greenland is not for sale,” according to a statement from Frederiksen’s office, Reuters reported.
“The Prime Minister emphasized that it is up to Greenland itself to make a decision on independence,” the announcement states.
Frederiksen also emphasized the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic and that Denmark is open to assuming greater responsibility, the statement added.
Trump, who takes office on January 20, said last week that US control of Greenland was “absolutely necessary” and did not rule out using military or economic action such as tariffs against Denmark to achieve it.
