“Free… free” blocking users on X

His X Elon Musk will now make posts visible to users you’ve blocked, whether you like it or not. In a response on Monday, Musk stated that “the blocking mode will prevent this account from participatingbut it won’t prevent tracking of public posts.”

X currently displays the message “You are blocked” when you try to view the profile of a person who has blocked you. Moreover, apart from blocking all posts, it also prevents you from seeing their replies, media and follower list.

A source at X told The Verge that the platform is making this change because people can already see the posts of users who have blocked them when they’re using another account or when they’re logged out, but several have noticed that X is actually blocking viewing someone’s profile if you are offline. Musk has publicly expressed his disapproval of the block button. Last year, he said the operation “doesn’t make sense” and that he “should be eliminated in favor of a more powerful form of muting». It even threatened to stop allowing users to block people on the platform altogether, except for direct messages.

Although X’s block button will still prevent someone from interacting with a person’s posts, they will still be able to see them, potentially making it easier for “bad actors” to continue harassing their victims.
