Free game for streaming service: Nvidia gives new Dragon Age installment to GeForce Now subscription

From time to time, GPU manufacturers organize events with so-called bundles, where you get a free game as a bonus to the newly purchased graphics (or rather included in the price – if you want to buy the card at that time anyway, it can really be a bonus). Now, such an event is perhaps the first time for virtual graphics. Nvidia offers the game “for free” as a bonus to the GeForce Now subscription, with which the games run in the cloud and are streamed to your device as (lossy compressed) video.

The deal announced today applies to those who choose to subscribe to GeForce Now for half a year, and only to new customers, it seems. It only applies to the most expensive level of subscription, which Nvidia (in our country) calls Ultimate membership. In the Czech Republic, after last year’s price increase, it costs CZK 3,000 for those six months. In order to get the game, you have to subscribe for this period – the subscription can be terminated at any time, but the termination will not be valid until the beginning of the next billing period.

The game you get with this subscription is pretty interesting – it’s a story-driven RPG coming out this month Dragon Age: The Veilguardwhich is the fourth part of the famous fantasy series Dragon Age, directly following the previous title Dragon Age: Inquisition. It is again a game from the BioWare studio, known for the original two games Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, also the award-winning game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and, in addition to Dragon Age, also the Mass Effect series.

Reviews are yet to come and it remains to be seen how successfully Veilguard builds on previous Dragon Age titles, but it could be an attractive game. The price is €60 on Steam, which is about half of the subscription (of course, Nvidia probably pays significantly less for one license, as it already works with these bundles).

According to Nvidia’s website, the promotion should be valid for less than two weeks, it ends 30. 10. this year. The obtained code will be redeemable after the release of the game (which will now be at the end of the month), but no later than 31/01/2015.

The problem with game streaming subscriptions is that you avoid investing in a gaming GPU and still play (with technical and quality limitations), but only as long as you’re paying, and at the end of your contract you’ll have nothing left over for “virtual graphics”. So in the long run it should be more profitable to buy physical graphics. But they are also becoming more expensive in the long term…

Nvidia was giving away a game (Star Wars Outlaws) for physical graphics recently, but that event has now ended. AMD even recently bundled two games with graphics and processors, but that offer also ended two weeks ago. However, it is quite likely that the company will prepare another event for the grateful pre-Christmas period, so the opportunity for those interested in real hardware could still come.

The terms and conditions of the promotion do not directly state in what form subscribers will receive Dragon Age: The Veilguard. However, there are mentioned codes, so you should probably get a code to activate the game in the given distribution platform. Nvidia refers to the terms of the EA Play service, so the license obtained will probably be on that service (Electronic Arts produces The Veilguard and BioWare owns it) and will need to have or create an account. The terms also state that the offer is only valid while licenses last, but that’s the usual stipulation for these promotions.
