“Frelimo killed my son”: Daniel Chapo’s bloody inauguration as President of Mozambique

During the early hours and afternoon of this Wednesday, the day of the inauguration of the new President of Mozambique, at least eight young people and one child were killed by the police: three in the capital, Maputo; three in Nampula; three in Matola. In this last location, two are reported missing. The number of deaths since the start of demonstrations contesting the official results of the October elections is now more than 300.

In the morning, the messages on social media were not only about the expectations of the investiture of the fifth head of state in the history of Mozambique, but also about three lifeless bodies, covered in sheets. One of them, sprawled in one of the cramped streets in the Machava Socimol neighborhood, in Matola, is Estefânio, 19 years old; the second, a few meters from the first, was identified only by his nickname: Tavede. The latter was shot and fell onto the green grass of a water concentration area. They are all young people, shot dead at around 3 am.
