French press: Brest’s European epic continued against timid Sparta

Paris – The French press paid compliments to Brest footballers for their 2:1 win over Sparta in the 4th round of the Champions League. The newcomer to the prestigious competition from Brittany is halfway through the league stage in fourth place in the table, which the papers describe as a “European epic”, a “great story” or an “incredible journey”. According to the media, the Letensi scared the winner only when Victor Olatunji reduced in the set time.

Brest plays the main stage of one of the cups for the first time. At the same time, they are unbeaten in the Champions League with ten points, fourth behind Liverpool, Sporting and Monaco. “His great story continues. The fourth place is incredible for Brest and thanks to fresh performances, it is one of the attractions of the reformed Champions League. It would be hard to forget that the Brittany club is having its first experience in cup Europe,” highlighted L’Équipe.

“Brest, led by the great Ludovic Ajorque, has created a monopoly in the Czech Republic for clear chances against a rather timid opponent,” said the sports daily, recalling that coach Éric Roy’s team won three out of four Champions League matches. Of the French clubs, only Strasbourg succeeded in debuting in the most prestigious European cup in 1979 in the then PMEZ.

The French media were intrigued by the fact that Olatunji’s shot in the second minute of regulation came from the home team’s only shot on goal. “The Bretons controlled almost the entire match, while the Praguers still didn’t have a single shot. Brest continues to impress. Despite the scare in the set time in Prague, he triumphantly won and his European epic does not end,” wrote Le Figaro.

“Brest continues its incredible European journey. Although Abdallah Sima, the team’s top scorer in the competition with three goals, was missing, the guests were much more dangerous,” highlighted the newspaper.

The contact goal came too late for Sparta. “Victory seemed certain, but the Bretons still had a bit of a scare when Victor Olatunji cut down in the set-up. His goal ended up being without consequence,” wrote Le Monde.

“The visitors controlled the game and struck first against an opponent without ideas. Then they could have hidden in front of their goal and simply defended their lead. Instead, in an attempt to win, they continued to attack until they scored a second time,” praised Le Monde.
