French prize darling gets Golden Globe and extinguishes Danish dream

The Danish triumph did not materialize when the Golden Globe statuettes were handed out in Los Angeles on the night of Monday Danish time.

The film “The Girl with the Needle” thus had to look beaten when the award for Best Non-English Language Film was handed out around 03.00 Danish time.

The award, which was presented by the American actress Sharon Stone, went to the French musical “Emilia Pérez”, set in Spanish.

Danish “The Girl with the Needle” is directed by Swedish Magnus von Horn and stars Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm.

The film could have secured the first Danish Golden Globe win in the Best Non-English Language Film category since “Revenge” in 2011.

However, “The Girl with the Needle” was up against tough opposition in the form of “Emilia Pérez”, who was not only nominated in one category.

In fact, the French production was the film that was nominated in the most different categories at the night’s award ceremony – ten of the kind.

Among other things, Zoe Saldana, who stars in “Emilia Pérez”, won the award for Best Actress in a Drama or Musical.

When the European Film Awards for the best European films were handed out in December, “Emilia Pérez” was also the big winner. It ended up with the most awards – five – including Best European Film.

“The Girl with the Needle” takes place at the end of the First World War in Copenhagen.

Here, the young factory worker Karoline, played by Vic Carmen Sonne, struggles to survive. When she becomes unemployed, pregnant and abandoned, she meets Dagmar – played by Trine Dyrholm – who runs an underground adoption agency.

The drama film is inspired by a real story about Dagmar Overbye, who in 1921 was convicted of the murder of nine infants.

In the years before, she had adopted them for payment from often single mothers.

“The Girl with the Needle”, which earlier this year was selected for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, will have its Danish premiere on 23 January.
